The city of Tylnicz is home to one of the largest excavations of carbon dioxide from deep geological layers. Amongst the plants growing on the wetlands, rust-yellowish sediments precipitated from the outflowing springs appear. Hissing bubbles of gas – in 95% carbon dioxide – emerge nearby. This gas make the local springs a sour and pungent flavour. In the 60s’ of the 20th century, the mofette carbon dioxide was used to produce algae on the terraces located on the nearby slopes. Research was also conducted into the use of algae in the production of food for Soviet cosmonauts.
