The comfort and efficiency of sleep depend on many factors - among them, an appropriately chosen pillow is important. However, not everyone knows that the choice of a pillow should be adapted to the purchased mattress. Why is this so important?

If we decide on a soft mattress and pair it with a hard pillow, our body will sink into the mattress during sleep, while the head remains higher - as a result, the neck will unnaturally bend. In the opposite situation - choosing a hard mattress and a soft pillow - we will not achieve sufficient support for the cervical spine. For this reason, the pillow should be selected after purchasing a mattress that meets our expectations. Together, they will ensure an optimal body position, and thus comfort during nighttime rest.

Which sleeping pillow is the best?

Thanks to the vast diversity of available options, we can choose a sleeping pillow that is not only suited to our needs but also to our body build, sleep position, or individual preferences. So, what should guide us to make the best choice for ourselves?

Sleeping pillow and body build

A good sleeping pillow is one that is adapted to our body build - especially the shoulders. For people with narrow shoulders, a lower or softer pillow will be the optimal solution - in such a case, less neck support will be sufficient. Conversely, people with broad shoulders must ensure better filling of the space under the neck. Hence, a great proposition for them would be higher or harder pillows - especially for side sleepers.

The firmness of the sleeping pillow

Similar to choosing a mattress, when buying a pillow, we can also decide on a soft or hard model. What are the differences between them? A soft sleeping pillow better adapts to the body, but if we prefer to sleep on the side, it may slightly hinder breathing. On the other hand, hard pillows do not collapse after laying down the head, but they may cause more pressure. If we do not have strictly defined preferences or recommendations, it is worth looking for a golden mean - thanks to this, the head and neck will be properly positioned during sleep, regardless of the adopted position.

Healthy sleeping pillow - high or low?

Many people asked whether they prefer to sleep on a high or low pillow would certainly choose the first option. Although such a solution initially may indeed seem more comfortable, sleeping on too high a pillow forces neck bending and prevents muscle relaxation - and this is a straightforward path to the development of pain disorders. Therefore, it is recommended to sleep on lower pillows. Although getting used to sleeping on a low pillow may seem difficult, it is worth considering to enjoy a better feeling every morning.

Types of sleeping pillows - which to choose?

When purchasing a sleeping pillow, the material from which it is made should also guide us. Among the most popular types of pillows are:

  • pillows with polyester filling - are mostly relatively cheap, but quickly lose fluffiness. Their advantage is that they do not cause allergic reactions;
  • down pillows - down is characterized by fluffiness and lightness, and additionally it excellently dissipates moisture, but it is unsuitable for allergy sufferers. However, down is quite expensive, hence many manufacturers combine it in pillows with cheaper feathers;
  • memory foam pillows - they are characterized by elasticity, softness, and at the same time, adapt to the body temperature of the sleeping person, simultaneously adjusting to the shape of their neck and head. Memory foam pillows also do not cause allergies;
  • latex fill pillows - have anti-allergic properties, do not absorb dust, are durable, flexible and adjust well to the body shape;
  • orthopedic pillows - their shape is inspired by the anatomical structure of the neck, providing high sleep comfort not only for people suffering from painful conditions in the cervical spine.
